To Øl Yeastus Christus

Farmhouse IPA, abv 7.4%

Appearance: Hazy brown-orange body. Big head that ends up being extremely lacy.

Smell: Extremely fruity with a brett funk. Hops up front. Dried peach smell. Very tropical nose. Smells like fresh pineapple juice.

Taste: Similar notes as the nose. Its not a timid IPA. It does have a strong hops presence. Very fruity with more
pineapple but now some stronger wild yeast funk. Very hoppy upfront. Milder in the middle, where the fruity yeasty parts are able to come through. Finishes with a nice tartness and sourness.

Mouthfeel: Higher carbonation but it works. The yeast tartness is present.

Overall: Very impressive beer. The ipa wild yeast combo are always fun to taste. Definitely a good beer. Higher in the abv but its a beer you will have an easy time tasting. Not too complex where you will have to think too much but its not one you can just through back. Another solid beer, from a solid brewery.

Tierra De Frontera Pale Ale

Pale Ale, abv 4.5%

Appearance: Red body. with a large head. Settles to a finger creamy head.

Smell: Light hops smell. Sweet with some small citrus.

Taste: Nice round body of the hops but definitely more hops than a pale ale should have. A long thinning bitterness finish from the hops. Not much else going on.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated. Really affects the taste. Medium body.

Overall: This is overall an drinkable beer (thats if you can be lucky like me and not find a contaminated beer). It has pretty much one note it keeps strumming. Its not anything special but it also isn't bad. The hop flavor is good but suffers of the downfalls of single-hopped beers, not much to round it out. The carbonation is a tad odd since it is very sharp and muted anything upfront. I am unaware if there is any flavors or character in the taste upfront because of the carbonation. The water was not filtered since you can taste quite a bit of minerals in the beer.

d'Achouffe N'ice Chouffe

Belgian Strong Ale, abv 10%

Appearance: Deep brown-amber with a large tall head. Settled to a very thing head with good lacing.

Smell: Carmel apple, spices (small cinnamon and cloves), and dark malts. Some spicy yeast smell, and a bit of oranges.

Taste: Thyme, yeast, and dark malts. Lots of spices that are very well balanced. Starts up sweet with the thyme, has a body made up of malts, yeast, and generally made up spices. Finished up with a soft hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: A little heavier than a medium body beer. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: The thyme and curaçao are certainly interesting pairing. They balanced out the rest of the beer, which had a lot spices and yeast smell.

Tyris De Valencia Malta de Blat

Wheat Beer, abv 5%

Appearance: There was a lot of sediment in the bottle but quite of been did make it into the drink. Gold color body with a thing lacy head.

Smell: Can't smell hops, its mainly just yeast. Maybe a little citrus. Very weak on the nose.

Taste: Very smooth upfront but very little to offer as far as taste. The hops kicks in on the end. very crisp finish that ends quickly.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. light carbonation.

Overall: This is overall a very smooth beer. Low alcohol. Its single hopped and for a wheat beer, sticks out quite a bit. There is no body here at all and honestly feels like a bud with a hop finish. Might be fine for some people but really leaves me unimpressed.

Struise Tsjeeses

Christmas Belgium Strong Pale Ale, abv 10%

Appearance: Dark red pour. Off-white creamy looking head. Settled to a half a finger head. Little lacing.

Smell: Carmel yeasty smell. Its very earthy and spices. Cloves and herbs. Good apricot.

Taste: Mixture of clove, anise, ginger, and cinnamon. Some nutmeg followed by a large yeasty taste. The yeast is in the forefront in this beer. Some great sweet molasses tasting yeast.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Low carbonation.

Overall: Great beer. Very different than most christmas/winter beers I've had. Most of it's flavor relies on its yeast taste. It is a great taste, the spices are playing background. It is a outstanding beer that just makes me warm all over.

Maier Pale Ale

Pale Ale, abv 4.5%

Appearance: Half a finger head with little retentions. Settles to an off white small layer on top of the beer. Very hazy orange body. Lots of sentiment at the bottom.

Smell: Orange citrus. Sweet honey. Its hard to describe this, but when agitated the citrus and honey mix combines to a salty almost sweet oceany smell.

Taste: Very astringent finish. It is a weird hop flavor at the end. Honey smell is almost gone. Citrus there in the front. The beginning and middle are nice and crisp then the finish is something odder. There is a small gap then it hits your with his high note of hops that ends very astringent.

Mouthfeel: Light body, light carbonation.

Overall: This was a confusing beer. As I kept drinking the beer it kept changing. I dont know if palate was adjusting to it but the astringency kept diminishing but at the same time there was loss in the other flavors. The smell was very confusing but it was not that good. Overall not a great beer and I probably would have a hard time recomending this beer to people.

Oude Geuze Boon

Gueuze, abv 7.0%

Appearance: Three finger fizzy white head. Apricot dark golden beer. Settles to half a finger very puffy head.

Smell: Strong citrus smell. Very musty smelling. Some pepper. Smells damp. Green apple.

Taste: Upfront lemon citrus and tart. Obviously sourness. Vinegar taste. Funky barnyard taste. Dry finish that is started by the tartness.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation. Medium body. Dry the whole way.

Overall: Pretty good beer. Being not too well versed in Belgian gueuze I cant make a large claim about it. To me its drinkable and very funky and complex enough to enjoy. I love the funk and down right barnyard taste to it. As someone who fell in love with sour beers not too long ago I can say I will return to this one once I try more.

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel

Hefeweizen, abv 5.4%

Appearance: Brown-red color. Large head (3-4 fingers) the subsided to one finger. Good retention. Very creamy head the whole way down. A few floaties.

Smell: High banana notes with a nice bubblegum smell. Cloves still lingering. Some yeasty smell hanging around but mostly overtaken by a toasty brown bread smell. Light caramel and malt.

Taste: Although ripe banana taste is still here, as on the notes, it is mellower. The maltiness steps
forward. Compared to the regular hefe, its just so well blended given the bigger malt aspect. Spicier finish. A little bit of raisin. Nutty in the middle.

Mouthfeel: Nice coating feeling. Very pillowy and sticks around. Nice and creamy.

Overall: Amazing beer. Having just tasted the hefe, I cant help but compare them. The hefe is just a better beer all around. Although the maltiness seems to blend to flavor of the banana it misses something by doing that. It is obviously a denser more rich beer, but every aspect of the hefe seem to out-do the drinking experience. By no means in this a bad beer, its actually an amazing beer, but its hefe brethren is just that much better.

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier

Hefeweizen, abv 5.4%

Appearance: A golden slightly hazy color. Very large creamy head. Decent retention. The head seems to be tight and creamy on top by when viewed from the side it has large bubbles.

Smell: Fruity. Banana bread, apricots. Amazing bready yeasty smell. Light spices.

Taste: Wheaty, bready. That banana bread smell is still in the taste. The spices are a little more present in the end. A little more fruity than the smell in the middle.

Mouthfeel: HIgher on the carbonation. Very smooth though. Light body.

Overall: What more can be said about this beer that hasnt been said? It's the standard of wheat beers. Its light fruity but layered enough to drink. The yeasty, bready, spicy, fruity smell and flavor are outstandingly well balanced. Just over a top notch beer. Beyond great.

Keltius Miño

IPA, abv 5.6%,  60 IBU

Appearance: Very large head on the pour. Nice red tinge, mostly a light brown though. Head settles down with lots of lacing.

Smell: Very beautiful hops bouquet. Nugget hops give it a large pungent smell. It has a very full body of aromas, alcohol is non-present. It reminds me of a much much lighter Hop Head Red from Greenflash, just similar bouquet.

Taste: Hops are very well balanced. It is very light on the hops all around though. Enough bitterness bite in the middle to let you know they are there. The bitterness does linger a nice while. Most of its taste is in the middle and end. Very little in the front. In fact, very little upfront.

Mouthfeel: Its a medium body. A little watery.

Overall: My first IPA from Spain and its very impressive. Given my growing knowledge of microbrews in Spain, I am very impressed. It will not push you back with bitterness as an IPA from the States will, but it will hold its own. Its very drinkable and given its abv, you can throw back a couple and enjoy them. The smell is nice and its has a taste that is missing something in the front of its profile but the middle and finish are very nice. It can be a little less watery but it is a great solid beer. Very drinkable, specially given the Spanish palate. Its a great beer, but as an IPA it leaves a bit to be desired.

Keltius Mosteiro

Abbey Style Belgium Beer, abv 7.8%

Appearance: Dark semi-opaque beer, with a shade of red. Big two finger head the settles to half a finger. Very little lacing.

Smell: Complex. A wide variety of malts. Light fruit aromas with a background note of alcohol. Very sweet notes.

Taste: Roasted malts, tastes much darker than it smells. Opens up in the middle with the alcohol taste that is nicely balanced with the bready taste. Finishes with stronger alcohol and very nice notes of fruits and flowers.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, does have a little bigger feel than normal belgium beers. Not effervescent, it feels a lot lighter towards the end. It does not linger long.

Overall: It's a really good beer. It poured much darker than I would expect for a abbey style belgium, its complex smell of malts was amazing. The alcohol is masked nicely in the nose but not as well in the mouth, but it also does not standout like a sore thumb. Given its price, I will not be having this one day to day but I will definitely keep a couple on hand for when the mood strikes me.

Keltius Trasno

Belgium Golden Strong Ale, abv 8.5%

Appearance: Dense golden pour. Looks almost unfiltered. Big billowy one finger head the settles down slowly to a decent layer on top of the beer. Very little lacing.

Smell: Light floral aromas, sweet with some alcohol. Mild herb smell, probably the cilantro they brewed with.

Taste: Very little up front then a rush of hops, cilantro, and alcohol. Hops linger the longest along with the alcohol. It becomes sweet after all that.

Mouthfeel: Oils coat your mouth from the first sip. They fill your palette and stay there for awhile. Its an alcohol forward beer but the oils seems to balance it.

Overall: Its a good beer. Could definitely back off the alcohol taste a little, but its good tasting. The hops and herbs seems to balance themselves out. It does fill your mouth and coat your palette in a great way. At its higher alcohol content, it would be a slower beer to drink.

Keltius

A little background on my next reviews. Keltius is a microbrewery located in Ouerense, Galicia, Spain. Craft beer is still in its infancy in Spain. This microbrew has just started bottling around two weeks ago., as you can tell from the hand written lot number and best by date. There were one of the first mircobrewery I knew about in Spain and excited to find them relatively easy to where I live. I hope to make a visit to them soon.

Estrella Galicia 1906 Reserva Especial

Appearance: The beer a amber yellow color and has a good amount of carbonation. It poured with about half a finger high with an off white head that settled to a short head that covered the surface. There was a good amount of lacing down the side.

Smell: light malt aromas, a little more bready than it looks. sweet.

Taste: Sweet up front; mildly bitter finish and aftertaste. Slight caramel and pale malts.

Mouthfeel: It's medium-bodied on the palate. Very clean and smooth. Does not match up with the smell.

Overall: Its a drinkable beer. Solid specially considering their base, Estralla Galicia. By no means is it a great beer or one to seek out, but when that is the best option where you are living then enjoy.
